In fact, it was quite rough and tumble, especially for people who were used to living in the larger cities during that time. At the height of the Gold Rush, it was near impossible to find some land to settle on, especially in California. So, when this happened, there was a land auction. To participate, you had to have money, time, and a little bit of luck to get the winning bid. You can see how crowded it was at this auction…standing room, only.
