One of the most memorable scenes in The Deer Hunter is the one in which Michael, Steven, and Nick are forced to play Russian Roulette. As each man switches and takes the shot, we’re breathlessly waiting to see what’s next, creating one of the most intense scenes of any film.

2006’s Martin Scorsese film The Departed features many plot twists, but one of the craziest comes towards the very end of the film. Billy Costigan has captured Sullivan and is on his way to have justice served. When the elevator door opens, suddenly a gun shot is heard and in the chaos, viewers are left stunned with what actually happened, leading a lot of viewers to pause and rewind to fully process what just happened.
